 KanREN Remote Access Policy

March 22, 1996

The KanREN network connection provided to a connected member institution is intended for use by individuals associated with that institution. It is intended that the access afforded by the KanREN connection be deployed only to host devices resident at the member institution site. All KanREN access must be in accordance with the published KanREN acceptable use policy and any acceptable use policy promulgated by upstream Internet access providers employed by KanREN.

KanREN recognizes, however, that there will exist situations in which the redistribution of KanREN access to individuals external to the KanREN member site may be desirable and in accordance with the mission of the KanREN member institution. KanREN sactions such redistribution of access as long as the policies documented herein are followed. These policies pertain to all off site access deployed by any KanREN member, whether such access is provided by the member directly or by third-party contract.

Any KanREN connected member institution that provides off site access to the KanREN network agrees that such access is subject to the following policies:

  1. The member site warrants that all such access will conform to the KanREN acceptable use policy and to the acceptable use policies of all upstream Internet access providers employed by KanREN. In particular, current KanREN policy prohibits any use of KanREN in the pursuit of a profit-making enterprise.
  2. The member site warrants that it has deployed the necessary hardware and software to ensure that all such external access is identified, authenticated, tracked and logged. This means that the site is making a good faith effort to ensure:
    • that the identity of every dial access user is authenticated, and only properly validated users are granted access
    • that a log is kept to permit, should the need arise, historical review of off site access to KanREN, by time, date, access port identity and user identity
    • that KanREN will be granted access to such log records upon request
    • that individuals granted access are informed of the need to conform to the various acceptable use policies mentioned above
  3. The member site informs KanREN, in writing, of its intent to deploy off site access and provides to KanREN
    • the vendor name and model number of the equipment used to provide off site access
    • the approximate number of individual users that will be using the service
    • the number of dial lines the institution is making available
  4. The member site understands that technical support for off site access provision and for the individuals using this capability is the responsibility of the member site.

KanREN reserves the right to restrict, prevent or otherwise control off site access to its network deployed by a particular member institution if KanREN believes that such deployment is not in accordance with the policies listed above.
