Commodity Internet Services

While Commodity Internet service ("I1") is not KanREN's primary focus, all members enjoy access to I1 service via the KanREN backbone. The power of buying large subscription rates for all members allows KanREN to offer service at a much lower cost.

How is KanREN's Internet Service Different?

KanREN's I1 services differ from most providers because KanREN does not oversubscribe our I1 access. We only sell the I1 access we can actually support.

Many providers oversubscribe Internet services at a rate of 3 to 1 (or greater). This means that if all users were consuming services, the provider could only provide 1/3 the access your organization has purchased. Conversly, KanREN actually purchases more Internet service than our members have requested. This allows the KanREN network to quickly fill requests for upgrades because additional I1 service is not needed. Additionally, the KanREN network copes with large network events more gracefully than most commercial networks.

Where does KanREN get its Internet Service?

KanREN purchases commodity Internet services from two separate companies; Cogent in Kansas City, MO and Cox Communications in Wichita, KS. This provides KanREN users a level of redundancy that many ISPs cannot boast.

KanREN makes traffic useage graphs available to all organizations via the Cacti graphing system. Please note that Cacti graphs are based on 5 minute average and should not be considered exact for short bursts.
